Solar Pool Heating

How Solar Water Heating is Better than Your Existing Heater

Your Existing Heater

YOUR EXISTING POOL HEATING SYSTEM
  • Water is drawn from the pool by a pump and sent thru the filter and heater on a six hour per day cycle to keep the water clear and warm.

  • If the pool is below the desired swimming temperature the aquastat in the gas heater will ignite the burners to return warmer water to the pool causing fuel to be consumed.

HOW SOLAR HEATS THE POOL TO
REPLACE FUEL BURNED BY THE GAS HEATER

  • A 3-way valve diverts the water during the normal daily filtering cycle to the solar panels to heat the pool water before it enters the gas heater

  • The heater will sense that the water has already been heated by solar panels and will not ignite

  • The control is set by the operator to a desired pool temperature

    • If it is a sunny day and the pool water is below the desired temperature setting the 3-way valve will rotate to send the water to the solar panels on the roof to be heated

    • When the desired pool temperature has been reached the 3-way valve will rotate to by-pass the solar panels and send the water directly back to the pool with no further heating

    • If there is no sun and the pool needs to be heated the 3-way valve will by-pass the solar panels and send water directly from the filter thru the gas heater and back to the pool

WHAT YOU PURCHASE & HOW MANY SOLAR PANELS (collectors)

ECO Spark looks better, lasts longer and out performs unglazed pool panels by a wide margin

Inferior unglazed panels

Almost all of the heat is lost at the surface of the pool through evaporation and convection. Therefore the most important factor is not the gallons of the pool but the exposed surface of the pool. This is why pool covers are important.

All pool panels are not the same. Commonly unglazed plastic panels are all you need to heat a seasonal pool. These panels typically perform at a relative performance of 1 to 1.5 btu/sqft/day. They cost about half of the ECO Spark glazed pool panels we sell. Also if you like your pool warm at 82 degrees, glazed panels are what you want.

Eco Spark have been tested and certified to perform at 44.7 btu/sqft/day!!! That’s 40 times more heating for twice the price. You could also say that you will get about four additional months of free swimming each year. If you use a pool cover in the winter you can swim year round with glazed pool panels.

The surface area of our glazed panels should be about 50% of the pool surface area. For harsher climates and year round swimming use up to 100% of the pool surface area.

Example: Pool Area: 16′ x 32′ = 512 sq ft. Use about (8) 4’x 10′ panels costing $450 each. Each panel requires a $50 collector connecting and mounting kit.

Total cost of collectors is 8x$500=$4,000

Basic Controller and 3 way valve costs $525

The total cost of your deluxe pool heating system is $4,525
